Things to do in Tamarindo Costa Rica
Tamarindo Bay attracts surfers and blue water sport fishermen from all over the world and is widely recognized as the top destination for surfing and fishing in Costa Rica. The sport fishing fleet of talented and conservation oriented captains in these waters are the pioneers of the Pacific coast. Surf casting and hand-lining for snook, snapper and jack are also popular. Best of all, Tamarindo is one place where you can enjoy your own fresh catch cooked up by a friendly chef in one of the beachfront restaurants.
Surfers in Tamarindo enjoy warm water surfing year round. The area offers surfing opportunities for surfers of all skill levels, making it an especially family-friendly destination. Tamarindo was featured in the popular movie Endless Summer II as the first stop on an epic worldwide surf journey.
For golfers, two world class Costa Rica golf courses are within half an hour away - Hacienda Pinilla, which is just outside Tamarindo, and the Hotel MeliĆ Conchal Golf Course which is twenty minutes from Tamarindo, both designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Hacienda Pinilla features a back nine with an incredible ocean view and a constant ocean breeze.
In Tamarindo there is something for everyone; visitors enjoy easy access to scuba diving, snorkeling trips, ocean and river kayaking, beach cruises and catamaran sailing cruises. Beach gear, surfboards, boogie boards and rental equipment of all types are readily available here. In the evening, visitors get to experience typical Costa Rica night life in Tamarindo. Couples will find plenty of choices for a sophisticated candlelight or seafood dinner, followed by a visit to one of the two casinos or dancing in one of the many night spots around town. For quieter entertainment there are video rentals and internet cafes. For families, enjoy spending a day together on the beach, or try something adventurous such as 4x4 tours, horseback riding, wildlife sighting river trips, canopy tours, ziplines, bicycling, backcountry ATV tours, hot springs, or join an educational activity in the national parks, such as a canopy tour at Rincon de la Vieja National Park, a hike through the nature trails at Santa Rosa National Park, observe exotic animals in their natural habitat in Palo Verde and Ostional National Wildlife Refuge. Playa Grande and Playa Langosta are part of Costa Rican national park system and are protected nesting areas for giant leatherback turtles, which arrive yearly between November and February to lay eggs; you can sign up for tours that take visitors to see this incredible spectacle led by official guides.
