About Dominical Costa Rica

Costa Rica has become one of the world’s most popular destinations for adventure travel, natural diversity, scenery, and water sports. Whether you have a week or a month, Costa Rica offers something special for every visitor.
North American travelers to Costa Rica appreciate accessibility with no “jet lag”. San Jose, Costa Rica is only two and a half hours from Miami. More than 20 direct flights are available daily from U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, New York, and Atlanta. Situated in the Central Standard time zone, the time in Costa Rica varies by no more than two hours from any U. S. location.

Costa Rica is often called “the Switzerland of Central America”. Combining its incredible scenic wonders, relatively low cost of living, and diverse set of activities, the country now welcomes over one million tourists per year.

Dominical Tourism

“...This area is reminiscent of California’s Big Sur because of its spectacular coastline and towering mountains that meet the sea. Dominical is also famous for its long beach, spectacular shoreline, mountain backdrop, panoramic views, excellent surfing, and jungle waterfalls”.

Dominical is uniquely situated at the crossroad between Costa Rica’s central and south Pacific coasts, where mountainous rainforest meets dramatic surfs, offering an unmatched diversity of adventures and explorations. Blessed with a breathtaking setting where the coastal mountains dramatically descend to meet the Pacific ocean, Dominical offers an amazing combination of year-round tropical lushness, spectacular ocean views, and miles of unspoiled beaches.  Its proximity to an endless variety of nature and adventure activities – on shore and off – concentrates the best of Costa Rica in a small, accessible geographical area. Visitors to Dominical gush about the variety of birds and wildlife and Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge, about their excitement of swimming with dolphins at Marina Ballena Marine Park, about the breathtaking sight of twin 600-foot waterfalls at Diamante Waterfalls.  Visitors and residents alike never seem to tire of the fabled sunsets and limitless coastline viewpoints.

“… this town attracts those seeking an alternative lifestyle. It is not unusual to see people practicing the oriental art of tai chi or yoga on the beach. Dominical is a charming little town with friendly people who say hello and greet you with smiles”.

Getting To Dominical

Getting to Dominical is easy. You can hop on a local 40-minute flight from San Jose to Palmar Sur via either SANSA (from San Jose International Airport) or via Nature Air (San Jose Municipal Airport). Flights normally arrive at Palmar Sur in the morning. At the Palmar Sur Airport, we can have a rental car arranged for your arrival, or have a private car arranged to take you on the 40 minute scenic ride to Dominical. If you have more time and wish to explore some of Costa Rica’s scenery, you may want to rent a car at one of several international rental car agencies (e.g. Hertz, Budget, Avis) in San Jose downtown or at the Airport. The drive from San Jose to Dominical takes about four hours, depending on time of day and which of the two scenic routes you choose. Go by way of Jaco and Quepos and enjoy the coffee plantations, ranches, and palm plantations – with a stop near Carara National Park and observe the crocodiles lazing in the river. Or, go south from San Jose, by way of historic Cartago, the scenic and lush mountain area of Chirripo, and onto southern Costa Rica’s gateway town of San Isidro. Either way, you’ll enjoy Costa Rica’s natural diversity, as well as the opportunity to stop for some local cuisine and several arts and crafts shops.
